Harlem Mothers and Fathers S.A.V.E (HMF) is a non-profit dedicated to saving New York City’s youth by preventing gun violence and addressing its social causes.

They wanted to launch a communications campaign to raise awareness of their mission and amplify their impact in Harlem. The challenge was finding a way to speak about gun violence in a way that didn’t retraumatize — but instead, united and empowered a community rooted in shared grief.

Through our research, we found that by uniting through loss, HMF sought to reshape the narrative around violence and encourage individuals to channel emotion into active change.

The Language of Grief

HMF has the unique position to be a stronghold that helps adults and youths navigate the emotional impact of gun violence. They are the changemakers for the community that no one else can be because of their lived experiences.

Grief can take many different forms, but those who have been transformed by it speak the language of grief best.

From Grief to Gratitude

An Immersive Experience

ROOM l: GRIEF

The exhibit features a large, dimly lit room that showcases statistics, facts, and news stories on gun violence in NYC, highlighting its devastating effects on communities. Additionally, the exhibit presents personal stories of parents and how they learned about the tragic loss of their child and the aftermath

ROOM 2: GRATITUDE

The exhibit displays recreated bedrooms of young individuals lost to gun violence, featuring their dreams, passions, and accomplishments preserved by grieving parents. Each installation, serves as a reminder of the real lives behind tragic headlines and the lasting impact on affected families

ROOM 3: ACTION

The final room features expansive write-in walls and ends with the HMF campaign manifesto. Visitors are encouraged to self-reflect and express gratitude to someone from their past whom they never had the chance to thank. The prompt on the wall invites them to pour their hearts out in gratitude and the manifesto aims to inspire and empower visitors with HMF's story.
